The part of a camera system people skip
Most systems we are called out to were installed competently and configured carelessly. Cameras are mounted well, cable is neat, and then the recorder is left on defaults: factory password, continuous recording at maximum bitrate, motion detection on the entire frame, one shared login and remote access through a forwarded port.
The result is a system that fills its drive in nine days, sends a hundred notifications a night and is reachable by anyone who scans that port. Fixing it is a configuration job rather than a hardware job, and it is usually a single visit.
How we size storage
Retention is arithmetic. A 4K camera at 15 frames per second with smart encoding uses roughly 8 to 12 GB per day on continuous recording, less on motion. Multiply by camera count, then by the days you want.
Eight 4K cameras recording continuously need somewhere around 20TB for 30 days. The same eight on motion with tuned zones land closer to 4TB. That is why we tune detection before sizing the drive rather than selling storage to cover sloppy settings.
We fit surveillance rated drives. They are built for constant writing and they report health so a failure is a warning rather than an empty search result.
Securing remote access
Every recorder gets a unique strong admin password, and the default account is retired. Individual users get their own logins with the permissions they need.
Remote access goes through the manufacturer relay service or a VPN back into the site. We avoid forwarding recorder ports to the public internet, which is the route that puts camera feeds where they should not be. Firmware gets updated at setup and checked at every service visit, because most camera exploits target versions that were patched years earlier.
Alerts worth reading
Detection zones get drawn around the door, the gate or the lane. Where the camera supports person and vehicle classification we turn it on, which removes most weather and animal triggers in one step. Schedules matter too: a camera over a Cary office reception should be quiet at 3pm and loud at 3am.
Training that sticks
The moment footage is needed is a bad time to learn the interface. We sit with whoever will actually be asked for a clip, usually a manager rather than an owner, and walk them through searching a time, scrubbing to the event and exporting a file with the timestamp intact. That export is what police and insurers ask for.
